While higher priced than several smaller models, it makes up for it by delivering delicious, hot percolated coffee.
Why We Like It
The mostly stainless steel pot is large enough for family use, and the fitted top allows for easy transport without worrying about spillage concerns.
While the base of the pot is plastic, the remainder is stainless steel which helps insulate the beverage.
Because of that, it’s far less bothersome to pack up and take to the camp site or vacation cottage.
Because it is an electric percolator, you can easily and safely walk away and forget about it. It automatically switches to warming mode when the brew cycle is finished.
The chic retro chrome look means it can be brought out while entertaining guests without any embarrassment and it minimalist style means it works with most styles of kitchen.
The 12 cup size means it is suitable for most small gatherings.
There Are Some Negatives
Canned ground coffee tends to slide right through the mesh basket and leads to grainy coffee.
It’s best to incorporate a paper filter or better still grind your own coarser perk coffee via the store grinder or your own home grinder.
It may be more expensive that way, but you won’t waste coffee so the cost will even out in the end.
We make sure to soak the inside of the percolator right after every use to make sure no grinds or gunk settle in the bottom.
We missed out on a week’s worth of soaks a couple months into using this percolator and the unit stopped working. But we found a trick to correct that.
They use it for a while, love the quality of the coffee, and then all of a sudden it stops working.
A warm, beige liquid is produced but the hearty percolated taste is missing. This can be frustrating to say the least. This problem can be alleviated with a regular cleaning regime.
Should the user have to do that? A few disgruntled customers feel that they shouldn’t. But we argue that any type of appliance and certainly any type of percolator should be regularly maintained and cleaned.
The nature of used coffee grounds is to coagulate and gather together.
It is also naturally abrasive. Therefore it makes a certain sense to ensure some sort of maintenance regime is undertaken to ensure the quality of your coffee is at a premium.
So What Are Our Conclusions?
Ultimately we feel that the Hamilton Beach Stainless Steel Percolator is one of the best electric percolators out there in the market today.
It has a certain early 60’s chic and would fit pretty well with most kitchen décor.
It is a reliable machine that you can walk away from and is a great blend between modern and old school technology
Overall, we think it’s well worth the price, as long as you take the time and put in the effort to clean it, it makes great cup of coffee.
We give a solid 4.5 out of 5 for this percolator which is probably the highest rating we would ever give a product
